Acre Rebozo
Plain Weave using Linen, Wool, and Cotton
with a Painted Warp
180”x36”
Year: 2024As the plain woven structure allows for the basic grid structure to be revealed, I lean into this way of organizing to exposed the subtle washes and color transitions the painted warp aways for. As a rebozo, I seek to examine the historical context of what is typically seen as an indigenous Mexican woman's piece of clothing and reimagine them as a queer garment for anyone to find protection and warmth in, expanding on the craft of Mexican woven and dyeing traditions. Becoming almost painting like, this object becomes a reflection of those who view it. Moving and flowing through every thread, every color, the viewer is asked to imagine what these forms of dress and identity means to them and how they can expand their own meanings within fibers and the garments we all wear.
